Monthly subscription services are my go-to gift when I’m not quite sure what to get someone. You don’t have to know much about someone to pick one that they will like. They are (quite literally) the gift that keeps on giving. The recipient will be reminded of you each month when they receive something new!
When I gift someone a subscription service, I generally sign them up for 3-12 months, depending the cost per month and my budget. It’s a great way to split up the cost of a gift, rather than spending the money all at once.
Wether you’re looking for a unique gift for an environmentally conscious friend, or just looking to treat yourself, these monthly subscription services are going to make the earth as happy as whoever receives them!
1. Imperfect Produce
Did you know that about 30%-40% of edible produce is thrown out because it’s not marketable in grocery stores? Environmentalists today are pretty concerned that so much food is being wasted because it isn’t “pretty” enough.
Your eco-conscious friends are probably willing to eat these uglies to spare them from being thrown out. Imperfect Produce is a monthly food service that delivers the ugly produce that doesn’t meet supermarket standards.
There are a variety of options available. And because the produce would otherwise be tossed, it costs 30%-50% less than what you would pay at the grocery store!
2. Compost Service
For the apartment dwelling environmentalist, composting can seem like a goal that just can’t be conquered. Without yard space, those living in cities have to get a little creative to find ways to compost.
You can help your urban friends turn their waste into nutrient rich, organic material that is super beneficial for air quality, water, and soil. Just sign them up for a curbside compost pickup program.
A quick internet search can help you find a curbside compost company in your area and within your price range.
3. Terra Bella Box
For the eco-chic gal, a love of beauty products and a concern for the environment can cause inner turmoil that only a middle-class, millennial, granola hippie like myself could understand.
Terra Bella box is a great choice for the environmentalist who still wants to wear a little rouge now and again. Each box features products that are all natural, cruelty free, and created by small businesses. They offer two different sizes, so you can pick the one that best matches your budget!
4. The Simply Co. Laundry Detergent
Lauren Singer (the amazing woman who first introduced me to the zero waste lifestyle) offers her toxic free laundry detergent as a monthly subscription.
The Simply Co. is a great minimalist option because, rather than getting several new products each month, you get just one–laundry detergent.
5. Honest Company
The Honest Company subscription is perfect for any new parent who is concerned with the environment, or just wants to be mindful about what ingredients they’re using around their little one.
The company offers a variety of baby products and other household supplies that emphasize non-toxic and ethical ingredients.
While their diapers and wipes are still single use, their personal care products are better options than those available at grocery stores.
This service can be less wasteful than other subscription services because you select what you’re getting, rather than receiving an unpredictable selection of products that you may end up not using.
6. Vegan Cuts
Eating a vegan diet can be pretty challenging when you don’t have easy options available. A vegan snack box can help keep new and veteran vegans encouraged to sticking with their plant based diet.
Vegan Cuts is a monthly subscription box featuring vegan snacks and other goodies.
While the products do come in individually wrapped packaging, a vegan diet has a much greater impact on the environment than a zero waste lifestyle, so we’ll let that one slide.
