Eco-Friendly Monthly Subscription Gift Ideas

CSA pickup box

Monthly subscription services are my go-to gift when I’m not really sure what to get someone. It’s pretty simple to pick which one someone will like, and they are (quite literally) the gift that keeps on giving!

I will usually sign someone up for about 3-12 months of a subscription service, depending on my budget and the cost per month of the service. It’s a great way to split up the cost of a gift, rather than spending the money all at once, and the person gets reminded of the gift you got them month after month!

Wether you’re looking for a unique gift for an environmentally conscious friend, or just looking to treat yourself, these monthly subscription services are going to make the earth just as happy as the environment-loving recipient.

1. Imperfect Produce

Did you know that about 30%-40% of edible produce is thrown out because it’s not marketable in grocery stores? Environmentalists today are pretty concerned that so much food is being wasted because it isn’t “pretty” enough.

Your eco-conscious friends are probably open and willing to eat these uglies that are otherwise being thrown out, but don’t quite know how. Imperfect Produce is a monthly food service that delivers the ugly produce that doesn’t meet supermarket standards.

There are a variety of options available, and because the produce would otherwise be tossed – it costs 30%-50% less than what you would pay at the grocery store!

2. Compost Service

For the apartment dwelling environmentalist, composting can seem like an unattainable goal. Without yard space, those living in cities have to get a little creative to find ways to compost.

You can help your urban friends cut down on their waste and turn it into nutrient rich, organic material that is super beneficial for air quality, clean water, and soil by signing them up for a curbside compost pickup program.

Companies like Garbage to Garden and Compost Crew will pickup compost right from the street, just like garbage and recycling pickup.

A quick internet search can help you find a curbside compost company in your area and within your price range.

3. Terra Bella Box

For the eco-friendly woman, a love of beauty products and a concern for the environment can be pretty conflicting interests.

Terra Bella box is a great choice for the environmentalist who still wants to wear a little rouge now and again. Each box features products that are all natural, cruelty free, and created by small businesses. They offer two different sizes, so you can pick the one that best matches your budget.

4. The Simply Co. Laundry Detergent

Lauren Singer, the amazing woman who first introduced me to the zero waste lifestyle, offers her toxic free, sustainable laundry detergent as a monthly subscription.

The Simply Co. is a great minimalist subscription option, because rather than getting a ton of new products each month, you get only one – laundry detergent.

5. Honest Company

The Honest Company subscription is perfect for any new parent who is concerned with the environment, or just wants to be mindful about what ingredients they are using around their little one.

The company, co-founded by actress Jessica Alba, offers a variety of baby products and other household supplies that emphasize non-toxic and ethical ingredients.

While their diapers and wipes are still single use, their personal care products are much better than the options available at grocery stores.

The Honest Company subscription box is less wasteful than other subscription products because you can select what you’re getting, rather than receiving unpredictable products that you may or may not use.

6. Vegan Cuts

Eating a vegan diet can be pretty challenging when you don’t have easy options available. A vegan snack box can help keep vegans new and old encouraged to sticking with their plant based diet.

Vegan Cuts is a monthly subscription box featuring vegan snacks and other goodies.

While the products do come in individually wrapped packaging, a vegan diet has a much greater impact on the environment than a zero waste lifestyle, so we will let that one slide.
